# Watercolor Mask effects

Watercolor Mask feature can turn your customer's uploaded photo into a watercolor-like photo.

| This is a built-in Teeinblue feature, so no connection to any third-party service is needed!

**Before we begin, please keep in mind how this effect works:**
* Retouch the photo’s colors to give it a painted look
* Apply a paper-like texture layer (can be toggle on/off)
* Add a mask to mimic watercolor brush spreads

| \*\*Important: \*\*This effect does NOT repaint the image, it only slightly retouches the photo to blend the colors.  For a full repaint, please use [Gen AI](https://support.teeinblue.com/en/article/gen-ai-effect-faqs-1t47d9o/) feature instead

# Creating the Upload Photo layer with Portrait Sketch effect

|| This feature works best with portraits of people or pets, and may not produce good results with scenery images.

* Go to **Artwork editor > edit an image layer**
* In Personalization Options, choose Upload photo. You can read more about that feature [here](https://support.teeinblue.com/en/article/upload-photo-feature-1gnhtlv/).
* Under the\*\* Image effects\*\* section, select `Water Color (TIB)` option:

**The following list explains what each of these settings does:**
* ***Use Teeinblue's Default mask*:**
This option will auto apply a mask with a suitable size for the customer's photos

* ***Use custom masks***: you can also upload a custom mask to the uploaded photo. This adds a soft, painted edge or overlay, making the image blend naturally into your artwork. You can choose from our pre-made watercolor masks by clicking the Example Mask button.

|| If you upload a custom mask, make sure the image is a PNG with a transparent background, and the mask area is filled in black.

* **Remove paper background:** By default, there's a paper-like texture background, adding grain and making it look more like a real painting or drawing. Enable this feature will remove the paper background and make the outside of the watercolor mask transparent.
